Add Some Salt!

I didnā€™t realize how significant salt is to Christians until recently. I always thought of it simply as a condiment that makes food taste better, but how necessary is it really?

According to Leviticus 2:13:

ā€œYou are to season each of your grain offerings with salt; you must not omit from your grain offering the salt of the covenant with your God. You are to present salt with each of your offerings.ā€

That verse made me pause. It seems like salt is pretty important. I also remembered Matthew 5:13, where Jesus calls us the "salt of the earth." If we lose our essence as salt, we are no longer good for anything.

The Importance of Salt to Christians

This tells us that, as Christians, we are incredibly importantā€”we are meant to be the light of the world for those who donā€™t know Christ. This means we shine the light for others to see. This light should show in the way we work, talk, and live with people.

Letā€™s take a closer look at the purpose of salt in the grain offering and what it means for us as Christians.

1. To Add Taste and Value

Salt transforms food. It takes something bland and makes it flavorful (as long as you donā€™t go overboard!). Similarly, as Christians, we are meant to add value to the world. Our lives should make a difference. With Jesus at our core, we bring value to everything we do and say.

2. As a Preservative

Salt has been used for centuries to preserve food, especially meat. It symbolizes purity, incorruptibility, and preservation. In biblical times, salt helped prevent food from spoiling. For us, it means keeping the light of Christ alive in our hearts and ensuring that light spreads to others. We are responsible for preserving that light in others by encouraging and supporting one another.

Let's not get it twisted, it will not always be easy peasy. Sometimes, we just want to blend in or fit like everyone else. To be honest, it is a lot easier to be the same as everyone else than stand out. But, let's see what Apostle Paul has to say in Galatians 6:9.

ā€œSo we must not get tired of doing good, for we will reap at the proper time if we donā€™t give up.ā€

This is not always easy, but we have hope! Godā€™s Word encourages us in Colossians 4:6:

ā€œYour speech should always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you should answer each person.ā€

Everyone is unique, and we should approach people with grace and wisdom. To preserve others, we need to remain rooted in Godā€™s Word. The more grounded we are in Christ, the more we can reflect His love and truth.

3. As a Gift

In biblical times, only the best offerings were given to God. He was specific about what was to be presented. Grain offerings had to be made from fine flour, and if it was bread, it had to be unleavened and without honey. So, when God asks for salt, we know it holds a place of significance.

Salt was a key part of these sacred offerings, emphasizing its importance in the covenant with God.

4. A Covenant

2 Chronicles 13:5 speaks of a ā€œcovenant of salt.ā€ According to the Book of Leviticus, every grain offering should be seasoned with salt. It was part of the covenant between God and His people: ā€œWith all your offerings, you shall offer salt.ā€

Salt in this context symbolizes the enduring, unbreakable nature of God's promises. It reminds us that our relationship with God is a covenant, one that is precious and lasting.

You Are the Salt of the Earth!

Remember, you are the salt that God speaks about in Scripture. You are precious and important in His kingdom. As Christians, our role is to bring flavor, preserve, give, and uphold the covenant with God.

So, letā€™s stay grounded in Christ, live out our purpose, and reflect His light to the world around us.

I wish you nothing but love, laughter, and of course, light!

  1. Interesting thought to pursue. Salt keeps things fresh and stops the working of leaven. Elisha used it to cure the waters of Jericho.

    1. Hi David, indeed it does!
I like how salt can actually stop the spread of undesirable elements like bacteria in food items. Metaphorically, like, corruption, bad habits or influences in Christians. There are so many ways to look at it.

"Distrated"

Permit me to use this new word coined from Disappointed and Frustrated. Thank you. And no, I don't feel this way right now at all. Far from it. On the contrary I am on a high. *wink* Ok. I promised to do a post on my jewellery project, but I'll still get to do it. This story has been pushing itself to me since yesterday and share it I must. There was a Retreat for some of my colleagues  in May, and I was to be a part of it. Notice for the Retreat was rather short and it actually conflicted with my brother-in-Law's (BIL) wedding. Well, the retreat was in Benin for Tuesday to Friday, and the wedding was in Kwara State for Friday and Saturday. This meant I had to pack a suitcase for the 2 events, right? Well, my MIL had graciously sent me the fabrics (Aso-ebi) for the Traditional and Church wedding, and I still hadn't found a tailor to help me make something really nice. (I wanted to dress to impress my would be in-laws). AS time was running out, I ditched...

Bored

Isn't it weird that I have a job, and yet I am bored. As a matter of fact, I have 2 jobs, and yet, I can't seem to find any interest in them any more. I wonder what happened? Once upon a time I used to be very very excited about one of the jobs. It was like the coolest thing after leaving the banking industry. But recently, I seem to get "hungry". Not hungry for food, but hungry to do more. Make no mistake, my desk is always full to capacity with work, I just feel there is a lot I can do that I am not doing. Like I am being underutilized. To make matters worse, everyone around me (my 2nd job) has gone for a training, and I wasn't included in the list. It makes me wonder... Anyway, I'm in the office by myself of all the colleagues in my subsidiary group, and I have a dozen and one things to do, and yet I am BORED!!! My mind is telling me its time to find "food"...wherever that may be! I need to get back to my newsletter, its long overdue for ...

The world as we know it now!

With the lift of the COVID 19 #lockdown in Nigeria, we have seen and heard of so much evil, it is scary. The increasing number of rape cases has made it necessary for us as a people to ensure we teach our children the right things. Parents need to educate both the boy child and female child- Teach the female child to stay safe always and teach the male child to protect the girl always! A friend was lamenting the other day about how things generally die down after a while here in Nigeria, and I told her its because we have a very short attention span for things. In a bid to have the "happening gist" we tend to move on too quickly to the next big news without concluding serious prevailing issues at hand. Much too quickly, we move on, forgetting that nothing has been done about it, and that nothing will be done about it till it rears its ugly head again.  The month of June seemed to be a whisper of a promise, a glimmer of hope to many, but so far, all we have heard in Lagos wher...
