I didn’t realize how significant salt is to Christians until recently. I always thought of it simply as a condiment that makes food taste better, but how necessary is it really?
According to Leviticus 2:13:
“You are to season each of your grain offerings with salt; you must not omit from your grain offering the salt of the covenant with your God. You are to present salt with each of your offerings.”
That verse made me pause. It seems like salt is pretty important. I also remembered Matthew 5:13, where Jesus calls us the "salt of the earth." If we lose our essence as salt, we are no longer good for anything.
The Importance of Salt to Christians
This tells us that, as Christians, we are incredibly important—we are meant to be the light of the world for those who don’t know Christ. This means we shine the light for others to see. This light should show in the way we work, talk, and live with people.
Let’s take a closer look at the purpose of salt in the grain offering and what it means for us as Christians.
1. To Add Taste and Value
Salt transforms food. It takes something bland and makes it flavorful (as long as you don’t go overboard!). Similarly, as Christians, we are meant to add value to the world. Our lives should make a difference. With Jesus at our core, we bring value to everything we do and say.
2. As a Preservative
Salt has been used for centuries to preserve food, especially meat. It symbolizes purity, incorruptibility, and preservation. In biblical times, salt helped prevent food from spoiling. For us, it means keeping the light of Christ alive in our hearts and ensuring that light spreads to others. We are responsible for preserving that light in others by encouraging and supporting one another.
Let's not get it twisted, it will not always be easy peasy. Sometimes, we just want to blend in or fit like everyone else. To be honest, it is a lot easier to be the same as everyone else than stand out. But, let's see what Apostle Paul has to say in Galatians 6:9.
“So we must not get tired of doing good, for we will reap at the proper time if we don’t give up.”
This is not always easy, but we have hope! God’s Word encourages us in Colossians 4:6:
“Your speech should always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you should answer each person.”
Everyone is unique, and we should approach people with grace and wisdom. To preserve others, we need to remain rooted in God’s Word. The more grounded we are in Christ, the more we can reflect His love and truth.
3. As a Gift
In biblical times, only the best offerings were given to God. He was specific about what was to be presented. Grain offerings had to be made from fine flour, and if it was bread, it had to be unleavened and without honey. So, when God asks for salt, we know it holds a place of significance.
Salt was a key part of these sacred offerings, emphasizing its importance in the covenant with God.
4. A Covenant
2 Chronicles 13:5 speaks of a “covenant of salt.” According to the Book of Leviticus, every grain offering should be seasoned with salt. It was part of the covenant between God and His people: “With all your offerings, you shall offer salt.”
Salt in this context symbolizes the enduring, unbreakable nature of God's promises. It reminds us that our relationship with God is a covenant, one that is precious and lasting.
You Are the Salt of the Earth!
Remember, you are the salt that God speaks about in Scripture. You are precious and important in His kingdom. As Christians, our role is to bring flavor, preserve, give, and uphold the covenant with God.
So, let’s stay grounded in Christ, live out our purpose, and reflect His light to the world around us.
I wish you nothing but love, laughter, and of course, light!
